Day 69 - 12/14/23 - Roseau, Dominica
Today's port stop in Roseau was the shortest of any port on this voyage. We arrived at 8am and had to be back on board by 1:30pm. So we chose to take the $2 shuttle to downtown. This shuttle was needed because the Eurodam got the primo parking spot in downtown while we got the cargo port out of town. Additionally, the Seaborne Odyssey had to anchor in the bay and tender.
We were joined on the shuttle by Bill & Solange who wanted tag along with us to visit the botanical garden where Angela and I wanted to hike up the Mountain to the Morne Bruce lookouts We walked to the garden and explored a bit of the level area before Angela & I began the hike up the hill on the Jack's Walk Trail. It's a strenuous hike up the switchbacks but the views at the top are worth it. After absorbing the views and enjoying a Coke Zero, we hiked back down the trail. There were lots of lizards scurrying out of our way.
Down at the bottom, Solange and Bill weren't there so we exited the garden to the north by the stadium. At the exit there were lots of hummingbirds feeding in the flowering trees. We wandered our way back down to the port area using the almost non-existent sidewalks and sharing the road with the traffic just like the locals. At the port we found the Old Market and shopped for a bit before catching a mini-van cab back to the port for $2 each. At the port, there was more shopping to be had plus Angela decided to get her hair braided.
We had an early departure at 2pm due to the distance needed to travel to reach Road Town, Tortola the next morning. Captain Smit even commented that we'd need to average about 18 knots. We cooled off for the rest of the afternoon and enjoyed a Seafood Boil Dinner with lobster bisque. This time we only ordered a single pot to share. It was the perfect size..
The evening's entertainment was David Klinkenberg, a very talented violinist. At the end he played and sang a wicked "devil came down to Georgia". Afterwards we participated in the Guess my Identity game show which Angela won. It was chocolate surprize night at 9:30pm and the treats were yummy.
Tomorrow we have a cool shore excursion booked in Tortola starting at 8:30am.
