Day -1 10/06/2023

 One more day!  When we woke up this morning we learned that the free breakfast was only going to be a small bottle of water, a dry cereal bar, and a cupcake.  Tge breakfast room was being used by a crew preparing decorations for an event in Miami this weekend.  We consumed that and headed out to walk to the Old Heidelberg which is a restaurant we like and have eaten at several times on previous trips.  It's about a 1.4 mile walk and it took us about 1/2 hour in the heat and humidity to walk there for lunch.  Lunch was terrific (Jaeger Schnitzel & kraut & Spaezel for me).  We enjoyed a pumpkin spice Frosty at Wendy's across the street and did a little last minute shopping at the Winn-Dixie before walking back to the hotel. During that walk we saw many little iguanas scurry to safety in front of us. They were the first we saw this trip.

We hung out around the pool much of the afternoon before walking over to the Marina 84 restaurant next door for a very nice salad dinner.  In our walk back to the room, we passed through the hotel lobby where a random lady asked me if we were sailing tomorrow on the Zaandam.  I replied that we were and that led to a nice conversation about cruising.  I felt like I had "Cruise Director" tattooed on my forehead.

We had a pretty quiet last evening in our room watching TV.

Day 72 - 12/17/23 - At Sea to FLL - Day 1

 All good things must come to an end.  It's now the first of two sea days before reaching Fort Lauderdale and the end of our 73 day cruise.  Given that it's Sunday, our first activity was to attend the final interdenominational church service.  It was good and we celebrated the 3rd Sunday in Advent. A light breakfast followed before we attended the well attended. ASK THE CAPTAIN session.  Captain Smit was his usual charming self and answered many questions from the audience.  A few key questions were asked.  First was about how efficient were we in conserving water on the trip up the Amazon.  Amazingly we conserved around 100 tons of water per day which totally astonished him.  Consumption went from 350 tons to 250 tons per day.  The second question was what was his favorite ship.  Without hesitation, he responded, "MAASDAM!"  It's also one of our favorite ships.  He also added that the Zaandam is his new "Maasdam". Day 70 - 12/15/23 - Road Town, Tortola, British West Indies

 This is another port and the last this voyage  that is a first for us.  We arrived early and backed into our berth.  Guests were allowed to disembark by 8am. Our shore excursion "Virgin Gorda & the Baths" came highly recommended by our friends, Susan & Rick.  It was a 40 minute catamaran ride to Virgin Gorda on another island.  From there we boarded F-450 open air shuttles for the 10 minute ride to the starting point for the "walk".   Devil's Bay Beach The caves A lone crab There were two options:  Walk the entire loop, or just go down to the Bath beach. We elected to do the entire loop and it was a wise choice as we really enjoyed it.  We walked down a gently sloping but twisty trail that threads its way down through the rock formations and ends up a Devil's Bay beach.  Many elected to go swimming, but I chose to photograph the scenery. Day 32 - 11/07/23 - Antarctica Experience - Day 1

 Today began our first full day in Antarctica.  The beauty of the day was that there was no official programming throughout the day until 4pm when the Expedition Team proctored a Q&A session fielding questions from passengers.  We were awakened by the Captain's 8am announcement and we reached approximately 65 degrees and 22 minutes south in the Lamiere Channel before having to turn around just before 4pm due to ice conditions.  It had snowed overnight and it was below freezing with snow flurries throughout the day although I simply dressed in my shorts and long sleeved University of Washington shirt and sandals.  However, most other passengers were extremely bundled up.  In the afternoon the Crow's Nest forward facing windows were blocked by snow and the aft LIDO pool deck was snow covered.  This is our first cruise with snow accumulations.
